Third Quarter Moon Again
When lunar phases occur on the first day or two of a calendar month, they
can repeat at month-end. The moon will officially reach its third quarter
phase at 1:13 p.m. EDT, 10:13 a.m. PDT, or 17:13 UT on Thursday, May 30. At third (or last) quarter the moon appears half-illuminated, on its western, sunward side. It will rise in the middle of the night, and then remain
visible until it sets in the western daytime sky during late morning. Third quarter moons are positioned ahead of the Earth in our trip around the Sun. About 3? hours later, Earth will occupy that same location in space. The
week of dark, moonless evening skies that follow this phase are the best
ones for observing deep sky targets.
