Young Moon near Venus (after sunset)
In the southwestern sky for a short period after sunset on Saturday, October
5, the slender crescent of the young moon will shine several degrees to the south of the very bright planet Venus. The duo will be cozy enough to share
the view in binoculars, but wait until the sun has completely set before using them. On Sunday evening, the moon's eastward orbital motion will place it more than 10 degrees to Venus' left, and a little higher, making it easier to see. Venus is farther from Earth than the sun, so it will show a gibbous phase in a telescope, in contrast to the crescent moon.
