Two Shadows Cross Jupiter
On Wednesday morning, July 31, observers located in western Africa can watch the black shadows of Io and Europa crossing the southern hemisphere of Jupiter at the same time for 110 minutes. At 4:55 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (or 04:55 UT), the shadow of Io will join the shadow of Europa, which began its own crossing of the planet 25 minutes earlier. Europa's shadow will leave Jupiter at 6:48 a.m. GMT (or 06:48 UT), leaving Io's shadow to continue on alone until 7:05 a.m. GMT (07:05 UT). Watch Io and Europa approaching Jupiter while the shadows cross.
