One of my PCs that I used for several years was one that someone set
out at the curb. There was not anything wrong with it so I never knew why. I wiped the HD and put linux on it and got many years out of it.

I don't know why but this take really resonated with me. Sometimes the loose fries in the bag are the best part of the meal :)

Much the same here. I don't buy much new equipment, a lot of perfectly serviceable equipment gets tossed. I picked up a LaserJet 5L from a corporate that tossed it, because it took to long to wake up from sleep mode. Nothing actually wrong with it at all.
I watched Jim Gaffigan on Netflix last night and he did about 10 minutes
of standup talking about McDonalds fries, car fries, bag fries and
leftover fries. Very funny.
In my case, I picked it up because it was within walking distance of my house. There have been other things over the years I have not picked up because they were not. ;)

A long time ago now.. I used to have an old van, Nissan Urvan E23. It didn't drink much fuel, and would crawl at a pretty slow speed allowing
a good trawling of the neighbourhood. Used to bring home all sorts of stuff.. being not long out of "home" all sorts of furniture and goodies could be used around the house.
My neighbor passed away, and had two what seemed to be old P4-era
family if I could take them, but I don't have room for retro hardware. I've got to virtualize old systems now.
Not to say that if I could find someone tossing out a Sun Sparcstation
2, 5, IPX, Ultra 1 or Sun 3 that I wouldn't make room. :)
