• Changes to FSX_CRY ?

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Friday, January 07, 2022 15:15:48
    Hi there

I'm wondering if the focus of the cryptographic topics discussed in the relatively lower activity level FSX_CRY echomail area should / could be widened?

Given there is increased interest in cryptographic currency, blockchain tech and NFT etc. perhaps those subjects can be formally incorporated into this echomail area along with the current stuff around encoded messages, keys etc.?

What are your thoughts? If you have any please share them in FSX_NET echomail area.

I will crosspost this message to FSX_GEN, FSX_CRY and FSX_NET

    Thanks for your input :)

    Best, Paul

Once again, I had assumed that cryptocurrency, and related tech, was already a part of FSX_CRY? Seems I'm learning lots of new things today! ;)

I think broadening the echo's scope is a good thing. Make better use of the echo, and blockchain based tech is a talking point these days.

I also would have assumed that these topics could already be discussed
    there :)
So I'm 'pro' widening the topic, although I think that most of this
crypto currency and NFT stuff is a big scam :)

I think CRY should be inclusive of Blockchain tech -- and everything
derivative of that -- NFTs, currency, wallet tech, etc. -- after all, blockchains utilize cryptographic algorithms, so it fits!

Also +1 to a "modern" tech echo. Could include all sort of discussion
    around hardware and software.

    Cheer!

Create an echo about computer-, mobile phone-, software-, network-security and cryptography in general.

Given there is increased interest in cryptographic currency, blockchain tech and NFT etc. perhaps those subjects can be formally incorporated
into this echomail area along with the current stuff around encoded messages, keys etc.?

    "Crypto means cryptography, not cryptocurrency"

"I have long been annoyed that the word 'crypto' has been co-opted by the blockchain people, and no longer refers to 'cryptography'. I'm not the only one." -- Bruce Schneier

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/nov/18/crypto-cryptocurrency-cryptographers

    What are your thoughts?

Just because something uses crypto, doesn't mean most discussions about that thing are be about crypto[graphy]. In case of cryptocurrencies, NFT, blockchain and other cryptoshit it's more about being hip, politics, wasting energy, mining, crime, financial stuff, ponzi schemes or the next cool internet thing (aka Web3.0).

So much stuff uses crypto, should we be inclusive and discuss for all the other things in general in FSX_CRY? Like

    my computer (has crypto inside)
    mobile phones
    streaming services
    e-books
    Covid-19 apps
    privacy laws
    messaging apps
    web browsers
    backup solutions
    cloud services
    cars
    games
    refrigerators
    wireless technology
    police
    military
    (cyber)war
    ....

Calling cryptocurrencies "crypto" is just marketing.

My suggestion would be to kill FSX_CRY (I don't like the three letter names) and create FSX_CRYPTOSHIT (don't call it FSX_CRYPTO) and some echo for (computer) security:
