In setting up my node details, there is only "normal", "crash" or "direct.

I'm not sure what your hub is asking you.
A normal netmail may be routed via one of your links toward it's destination. It might also go direct if you are linked with the destination node.
A direct netmail will not be routed, it will be sent directly.
A crash netmail will be sent directly, now.
We used to have schedules where normail, direct and crash were more meaningful than they are today.

so i have a question then. if there is a node that is "unpublished" or doesnt have a connection information in the nodelist,
how does the mailer know where to connect? I assume in this case it would just go to the hub ?

That can be the case for PVT nodes and also points. That is the main reason why PVT nodes are frowned upon, there is no way
to contact them directly.
In the case of points you can send it directly to the boss or route it and in the case of a PVT node your only choice is toyea a point i get route it to their hub/feed.
route it and hope it makes the trip.
