Yeah Magnetic media is going to deteriorate sooner or later. Even CD's will flake eventually. redundancy is the only real solution. Not to mention have backups off site to avoid location risk.
Redundancy is only part of the solution. You need a plan to refresh that media periodically - and to move it to supported media.
I remember when they were cleaning out the data center where I worked. There was a box of disk packs that were marked "Retain until <5 more years>". But the problem is that they were for an Honeywell DPS6 - which at that time was only seen in museums.
Needless to say, they tossed them. They did make cool, but really large, windshimes, though. 8)
