• Talisman v0.54-Dev Released

From Parcho@21:1/128 to All on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 03:41:20
Talisman v0.54-Dev has been released to address crashes of Postie after
using Bridge to cross-post between networks. This has been tested in both Windows and Linux and this marks the release of Postie v0.16.

Not only are we getting a new version of Talsiman, we have a new website
stood up for documenation: https://talismanbbs.org/ I will work on
converting all documenation from the old site to this new one.

If you run into any issues, please make sure to report them here: https://gitlab.com/lawrencestockman/talisman

    Thanks!
    Larry Stockman (Parcho)

I'm more than happy to hatch these files out to the file areas as well.

Who are you? Have you just forked the project? Why has there been no announcement from apam. (Unless his fallen off the planet)?

I can't speak for Parcho, but I had a Discord chat a/Apam a couple weeks ago and he steered me toward Parcho in terms of active TAL development. Apam was pretty happy for someone to keep it going.

I do hope he returns to BBSing as I consider him a friend and a skilled developer...

Hey Larry, this is fantastic! This is totally the spirit of open source. I know Apam will continue to be involved when he's able, and it's so cool to see this BBS software continue on under your stewardship.

Talisman is a great BBS, can't wait to see where it goes from here!

I think Larry for his service. And hope Apam is happy for whatever he is doing in life.

Sorry. I should have made some announcement. Though I wasn't sure at the time how keen laurance was with taking over, and didn't want to make him feel like he was committing to something he wasn't exepecting

I am tired of bbsing, and i don't have it in me anymore. Laurance approched me about forking and fixing a few bugs, and I was more than happy for him to do so, I encouraged him to do what he likes with it, and he's already made some improvements and working on some neat things.

I made him an admin of the long neglected facebook page as well which he has been using as well.

Please be aware though, as an open source project, anyone can fork the project with or without my approval. Though if anyone does want to make improvements i do encourage them to work with lawrence to avoid wasted effort.

I am very pleased that someone thought my project was worth continuing without me :)

Laurence I am sorry i've butchered the spelling of your name, hopefully i spelt it right at least once in this message :)

Hey There! I'm Parcho (Lawrence) and I have been working on Talisman BBS
for about a month or so. I'm working to resolve reported issues as well
as expand the tools that are available.

I am the admin of the Facebook page and the project is forked but keeping
the same name as it's the same project and will be done in the original
spirt of when it first started.

Apam hasn't fallen off the planet. He and I have been chatting about
Talisman before I took on updating to the next version. Didn't want him surprised when he saw the fork.

I will continue to maintain the project and I'm always looking for others
to help. It doesn't have to coding, it can be helping keep the docs up to
date, ansi screens or even feature requests.

It's nice to see you in echomail areas even if for a short time :)

I'm glad Laurance (see I'm using your speeling :)) has opted to pick up on your great work with Talisman and I'm keen to see fsxNet continue to support the development and distribution of the software.

Yeah, we all go through those type of fazes... I've left my own system(s) sitting doing there thing for weeks, and only checking that they are
    working.

OK. Great to hear. I've pulled the latest, and compiled.

As you can see, I've updated this test system to your version. Just not
done any testing yet as it's getting late.

One thing I noticed, there's a few undocumented features/mods that could be writen up. Happy to help, I just need to go back to my old messages!

    - Customzed login (e.g. creating a matrix style menu)
    - Ability to add system-level Lua packages (e.g. from LuaRocks)
    - Noddy (seperate app, not sure if apam will maintain?)
    - Bridge (not set to compile, but works!)
    - Ability to override specific system text lines
    - Ability to customize Full Screen Reader
    - Ability to modify prompts (and script/customize them)

I don't know if people understand how powerful Talisman's Lua integration really is. I'd compare it with MPL, thought it has far less "built in" functions, but you can just... write the functions in Lua.

I didn't want to create a new project from this but rather keep it going without disturbing the original repo. This is to ensure I can make
constant updates when needed without having to disturb Apamm to review
    and approve the merge requests.

Apamm is the original creator of this and will continue to receive credit
no matter how many releases we release.
