• v0.6

From apam@21:1/126.1 to All on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 16:26:30
    Hey

I'm contemplating pushing out v0.6 tomorrow. I would wait until a week
ticks over, but we have a rent inspection coming up, so might not be able
to and I'd like to get the bug fixes out.

v0.6 has the full screen reader, it's disabled by default, you need to
enable it in your user settings. I might switch that around though.

Been playing No Man's Sky the last couple of days, got stuck into it.
    It's a pretty good game.

Also wondering about making my own tosser instead of relying on HPT. It's
a nice tosser, will depend I guess on whether I get this bug fix applied.
So far it's been rather frustrating trying to get them to acknowledge
    there is even a bug.

Still, it would be nice to have something slightly more integrated.
Depending on the outcome, I plan to work on either the webserver (webbie)
or a new tosser for v0.7. I have started the webserver, it's using a http library I found on github, seems to work ok, but will need to know if I
    can do sessions with it.

Kind of tired, and a little frustrated, I was hoping to just use HPT, but
if they're not interested in fixing bugs...

    Andrew

    Exciting. Ready to install :)

Been playing No Man's Sky the last couple of days, got stuck into it.
    It's a pretty good game.

Procedural world generation is pretty amazing. The game was pretty sucky when it came out, but it's aged well with updates. It really captures the lure of exploration. I'm deep into Assassins Creed Valhalla at the moment, even though it's literally just another AC game with a viking theme :)

Also wondering about making my own tosser instead of relying on HPT. It's a nice tosser, will depend I guess on whether I get this bug fix applied. So far it's been rather frustrating trying to get them to acknowledge there is even a bug.

I think having a Talisman tosser is a good idea. As you know (lol) that's where I got hung up; compiling hpt is not super well documented. It'd def. be a point of friction for new sysops. I think what makes packages like Mystic and Synchronet so accessible is that mailers/tossers are bundled. That said, hpt setup isn't an insurmountable barrier with the right docs (maybe even videos).

Kind of tired, and a little frustrated, I was hoping to just use HPT, but if they're not interested in fixing bugs...

Looking forward to v.06 and FSE!

    Cheers,

Push it out. If it comes in time I can check it out before Tuesday.

I bought it when it first came out. I play it when the mood strikes, but
I'm not very good at those types of games, I just got suckered by the ads.

The source code for squish is available publically but I'm not sure how
well it was (if ever) ported to *nix. I'm not sure if it would be easier
to just write your own. If you write one I'll switch away from fastecho
as I'm only using that because I ran it for years. :)

I hope this is able to happen, I'd enjoy fixing those few issues today. :P

w00t w00t; I like how the colors show up as you write in the FSE- I bet you fixed it already in 0.6, but when using ||colors the character counts were messing up. Just in case you DIDN'T see that FSE bug...

Is there any OTHER software that you could put to use, so that you don't have to write your own? Gosh I'm a total newb but... can sync's or mystic's (no) or do any of the other bbs softwares use something we could tap into? Also - take time to dive into those games you like, apam! Lol... you are unique in the way you decide to start and blast thru projects. Its awesome!; but, don't flipping apologize for taking game time, or any time for self care... you deserve it!

Oh I know. I certainly don't care to impress the FTN folks, I guess
that's the upside of choosing squish - if people want to run fidonet,
they can always use HPT. The bug I found isn't game breaking, it's just annoying.

I did write a basic tosser for Titan, that worked as an endpoint only, so
I've been lifting a lot of code from that.

By the way, I wouldn't say I code faster, probably just have more spare
    time :/

Can you fork HPT and just bundle the HPT with your fix in place? I
did that with PDcurses and a few other dependencies.

It did cross my mind. :)

They still haven't rejected my patch, it's just sitting there and the guy hasn't responded to my recent comments.

In the meantime I've been working on a new tosser. I guess it doesn't
    hurt to have options.

Thats' as far as I think I've gotten with the one in WWIV.. At some point (on my todo list) is to look into doing a proper seen-by and path support. Right now I can ignore all of that and just leave it as-is for an end-system (leaf node)

I have always preferred the squish bases. I just found them easier to use and maintain. I have some large squish bases I could plug a BBS into if it supports squish. Given time of course.

I am simply a user of message bases though and I have no idea about their internals or what might make one format better than another.

I hope that apam can connect with the folks that maintain hpt. That way he wouldn't need to worry about the tosser end of things.

I was impressed with MagiMail also but it is another thing to write and maintain.

I do have copies of the squish tosser, but no versions for linux... only dos and os/2.

That might make for a fun project... setting up a system so that the tosser
for my linux board runs in dosbox. :D
