• FTN-style mailers/readers

From CyberNix@21:4/145 to All on Saturday, September 28, 2024 19:58:18
    Hi all,

My idea is to have a point node off my main node on fidonet and fsxnet and was just interested in what others use to read & poll FTN-style netmail/echomail on Windows & Linux.

I like WinPoint (http://www.winpoint.org/) but some of it is in Dutch and I don't think it supports CRAM-MD5.

Just wanted to gauge what people use so I can try it out!

    Thanks,
    Nick

I just log into my BBS and download QWK-packets of echomail, then read
them with an Offline Mail Reader called MultiMail. If I reply to
anything, that gets uploaded to the BBS in a QWK-packet and exported to
the network. Very simple, convenient, and works great.

The last time I did, I just duplicated my BBS environment (BinkleyTerm,
Squish and Max), removed the BBS, kept the message areas and mailer, and
used a message area reader (TimEd in my case) to read messages.

WinPoint and SemPoint seem to be the two major players nowadays.

OpenXP is quite a fine performer too! ;)

I'm using OpenXP on Linux, mostly because I've used in back in the 90s
when I only was a point.
But it really is the best message reader that I know, eg. the thread
view is very useful to keep track of larger threads.

The Search feature is superb, bar none. You can start a search
with say "User", and then narrow down the search results with
"Subj" or a string in the body of the message, for example.

And its overall performance like a database for messages is far
    better than manipulating qwk packets.
