Hello All,

ok, so i have a raspberry pi built in to my hobby-car, a mazda rx-8, it displays stuff from the engin via an obd2 adapter. today i realised that
i can install some other stuff on it, so i did install dosbox+some games, but now i can also check my favorite boards waiting for the read light turn green :)

A while ago, I bought a bluetooth OBD2 reader that can plug into the OBD2 port and transmit data to your phone, and there are smartphone apps that can read that and display your car's information.

However, and maybe it depends on the car, but I realized that the OBD2 port might be always getting power, even when the engine is off, which can drain the car's battery faster. So, these days I tend to avoid having something plugged into the OBD2 port all the time.

That's phenomenal!! A great combination of fun projects. And I'm pretty sure any laws against text while driving don't apply to FTN messages! (note: I am not a lawyer and that is surely false information) :)

You know it's Roon rolling down the street when you hear those modem connection tones booming from the subwoofer in the back.

yeah i did the same, but screen was small and for iOS you need a wifi obd2 adapter (bluetooth is not good for the iphones) and so there is no internet on the phone while using it. so i've got out the old dvd-driven (japan-only) navigation and built in the rpi. i've found some nice python scripts on github and i've customized it to my needs. installed kodi+plex, dosbox, etc.

yeah its getting power all the time but very few. if you dont move with your car for two weeks that is still not a problem...

i should make a LED display to the back window which says CONNECT 28800/ARQ/LAPM/etc... when reaching over 200km/h :)

Thats not useless.... I'd love to have that in my car, being able to check a few message boards while stuck in traffic/otherwise waiting would be great.

What setup have you got for input? I can't image you have a full keyboard sitting around in your car? Or maybe you do....

Yes that's great! If you were to reach 56k it may be a new land speed record!

The "/ARQ/LAPM" part is what really sells this. Wonderful detail and I must assume very safe driving. :)

I have an OBD2 device plugged in all the time. A friend assured
me that extremely little power is used when the engine is off.

I keep getting a fault light that resurfaces evey 2 to 4 engine
starts. Leaving the device plugged in much handier.

If you're worried about battery drain, can I recommend replacing your
interior lights with LED replacement bulbs? I do that with most of my
cars, the lights are cheap, they throw out a lot more light, and more importantly to me, if you leave the dome light on, it won't kill the
battery.

What do you mean by "coded"?

If you're worried about battery drain, can I recommend replacing your interior lights with LED replacement bulbs? I do that with most of my cars, the lights are cheap, they throw out a lot more light, and more importantly to me, if you leave the dome light on, it won't kill the battery.

I don't think I've ever forgotten to turn off a dome light, and other than that, I don't think there are any other interior lights in a car that would be on when the engine is turned off. I think my current car might actually have LED lights from the factory (though I'd have to double-check).

You'd have to think for the small amount of current it might draw, that it'd
be more an idictment of the battery state, or very infrequent driving. If it really worried someone, you could always bang a relay into the ignition power and loop the OBD power through it.

What do you mean by "coded"?

Plugged in an OBD reader to read codes from the car.

(It means something a little different now - I have a BMW i3, and there
are lots of configuration options available with a program called
Bimmercode and an OBD dongle. "coding" means changing the params to
change the car's behavior...)

nope, just ~120000. 4th engine :)

That sounds like a VW. I'm considering buying a VW Vanagon Westfalia, and like any old VW, the engines need to be "blown out" every 60-70K miles. Every one has a rebuilt engine.

I did find a decent one with a 2.4l aircooled replacement instead of the 2.1l engine, but considering that the steering wheel was on upside down, I was a little leery of the quality of work.
