• New job blues

From McDoob@21:4/135 to All on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 15:09:37
The process of getting a new job is full of self-doubt.

I didn't even want to apply.

I got the interview. And I kicked that interview straight in the balls. Apparently, I set a company record for fastest time completing the aptitude test. Also, the company needs a harder aptitude test...

And yet, as the dawn begins to glow, I am again full of self-doubt! I do not deserve it. I am not good enough, even though I know I am; I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Well, if they're stupid enough to give me a job, I'm stupid enough to take it.

But.... you got through the interview, so whats the problem? Worrying now that you'll get the job?

For me its never worrying about finding a job, but always worrying about the first day of work. Usually thats when you get slammed with all sorts of stuff to learn or figure out, or you are handed a big mess to clean up from
your predecessor. You have to meet all new people, remember names and faces and be friendly, confident even if you feel absolutely freaking lost inside.

The one who has doubt here is you. The only thing that matters here, is can you learn to do it? Have you learned and picked up skills in the past? Sounds like you've got a bit of 'imposter' syndrome.

Once I felt that way, after a job that actually didn't work out. The feeling wasn't real, wasn't justified. I doubted myself, despite ace-ing the interview (and I was told straight after the interview I was head and shoulders above all else). It took a while to accept I was doing the job well, and I was there for years, quit THREE times, with them asking me back once and not wanting to accept me resignation the time before that. So clearly my initial thoughts were wrong.

Sadly we humans can sometimes believe, really really feel to be true, things that aren't actually true. Look at this with a cold heart and hard head. It's purely a matter of applying knowledge and skills, and unless you know of specific things you won't be able to learn to do which you will need to be able to do, you're feelings are probably not based on rational thought.

Relax, the worst that can happen (if likely, which it probably isn't), is you end up in the same position as you would have been if you didn't take the job anyway. What have you got to lose?

For some proportion of the human race it seems to be SOP. I don't recall
ever feeling like that about a job, but in other aspects of life sure.. I always felt the jobs I held down were my own bastions of personal power...
but I have seen plenty of others that don't. Some get over it, some don't.

"The Dunningƒ€“Kruger effect is a cognitive bias[2] whereby people with low ability, expertise, or experience regarding a certain type of a task or area of knowledge tend to overestimate their ability or knowledge. I've been getting a lot of Facebook memories recently about my job hunt
and how I had a technical skills test which I blew through. I don't
think they expected me to finish so quick, especially with about 6-8 of
my potential peers sitting watching my every move.

Then they started peppering me with random questions like name some DNS
record types, so I pepper off the odd ones like SOA, PTR, and threw in
a CNAME. Anyway, I got the job. It wasn't paying as much as I wanted,
but I bided my time. Now with a promotion and bonus, I'm making close
to double what I started out making.

I have no problems taking their money, just as they will not have any
problem RIFing me should the economy flow south. By giving you a job,
they're not doing you any favors. They're filling a gap they need to
fill, until they need to unfill it. Worthy or not, job hiring simply
isn't about you, so I wouldn't worry about it. if they hire you, you
    obviously fit their needs.

Hey McD, Congatulations! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy... and, you're very welcome. Really happy for you.

It could, but I'm glad it didn't!

As promised, I've taken steps to remove this person from my BBS.

And yet, on EVERY other BBS, this is what I see!

You were also asked to stop fanning the flames, but you couldn't resi could you? For the record, I'm only responding now because you took cheap shot at me, right there above. Exactly what you were told to s doing.
Oh, I can assure you that 'G' is how he refers to me when doing this, as he seems to think that makes it OK to violate the rules. It's not the first time he's done it. I'm done with the thread, but wanted to say something so that he won't continue doing similar things.

Just keep in mind, he's no longer my problem, but he's still yours...

Deal with it. Stop being nice. I'll take the ban, too, if that's what it takes. He NEEDS to go!

You just shut your dirty little mouth! (@_@)

My current budget doesn't allow for much 'recreational' spending, anyway. And it's going to take a couple of months, at least, before that changes. I'd like to see my bank balance rise above zero first; I'm almost $2k down right now. Thankfully, I have good credit, so I was able to get some help from my bank when I needed it.

So...I turned in all the paperwork today. After a bit of 'negotiation'
on wages ("I got paid better to unload a moving truck, you need to try MUCH harder"), I accepted their offer.

    Awesome blossom, congrats!!!
