• icy_term - keeps getting better!

From paulie420@21:2/150 to Omnibrain [ALL] on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 19:40:46
So.. I've been using icy_term a lot m0re lately. Sync is giving me a couple issues on my current setup, and icy is on FiRE!

There's a few 'issues' or pain points that I'm keeping track of, and will send them up the chain to Omnibrain as I get a list... but nothing too crazy at all.

In fact, where Netrunner and Syncterm sometimes take up more CPU than you'd think they need, icy feels pretty lite - even tho its UI feels heavier... I can report that the Linux/Wayland graphical issues are completely fixed since a couple updates ago and I'm really enjoying the CRT filter settings; unlike 'Cool Retro Term' that can feel a bit much, the settings make the terminal look like MS-DOS/CRT very nicely. I don't love the curve part, but theres knobs to turn that down or even completely off... just saying, the filters available are actually a GOOD thing IMO. In its directory, you can set baud emulation per entry, use different screen modes with VIC-II and ANTIC as options and it allows TELNET/SSH/Websocket/Secure Websocket w/ custom IEMSI login data.

It feels more like a 'current' application that Syncterm or Netrunner IMO, which you may or may not like - but its growing on me...

If you have any issue with the terminal yer using, as I've heard some other users mention as of late, make sure to give icy_term a spin as its come a long way since its first release - we're not even to version 1.o, which tells me Omnibrain is foreshadowing that they have more changes to make.

All this, and its pinging me saying I can upgrade to version 0.7.4 so my praises aren't even reflecting all the current development! I'm gonna go grab that one and think you should, t00!

I think Omnibrain just needs m0re data from all the testers. Earlier versions didn't work in Wayland at all - and they now do, nicely... I have a running list of issues/bugs; some actual problems, but also feature requests... ONLY trying to help, as I think this is pretty spiffy and I'm looking for a new solution.

I'm aware of this issue. Seems I've to switch the graphics backend to wgpu - which I need to learn at some point anyways. I thought it's my shader code but it's the UI lib I use their glut backend doesn't work on some systems. But the wgpu does.

It was a 50:50 choice when I started the project and I chose the wrong API. I'm thinking about switching the UI lib to something different. But will decide later this year. (Depends a bit on my linux distro :)).

Understood - my issue/bug list is bigger since my GitHub post, but I'll say it again and again... I'm only creating it b/c I care and think the terminal has potential. I'm REALLY liking the 'cool retro term' effects - not over the top; it feels right for bbses.

At any rate, I'll post another GitHub post soon - I'm just trying to learn what bugs are real, and what are just... a hiccup or I didn't understand something - like, I thought there was no scrollback buffer - and sometimes it doesn't work correctly, but other times I can scroll my mouse wheel and see it... but let me test right now. Hang on.

Yep - so right now it worked!! Flawlessly... but other times it doesn't. At any rate, I'm logging all my findings and wishes.

It's not only running on Linux it's developed there :). I even recommend using linux for that.

Windows users have all kinds of problems. It requires opengl32.dll and VCRUNTIME140.dll there and not all systems have that. And on some systems it crashes. However I need to rework the graphics backend a bit to fix that.

Use Linux - it's the better os :)

however I lost a bit track because of the gtk4 bindings. It's very difficult to
write even a mid sized UI application with these. First I tried to ressurect my
old ansi drawi' in local database

icy_term TELNET connections lose carrier if left for hours

No mouse support? Some users like to use scroll wheel to advance messages their reading down/up lines. SyncTERM also has click support - character you click on is fed to the terminal... maybe just scrollwheel support for messages?

On Tuesday, April 2nd tenser was heard saying...
Something I'd live in icy_term is in issue #69: support for some sort of proxy or SSH jump host. That'd be wonderful!

I've basically not much clue about that request :/. However I can add an option for it after all I just call a library and there is an option for the ssh proxy command.
