As the original poster of the message in question, I am 99.9% certain that
it happened because I posted it in the wrong echo. Once I reposted it in
the ADS echo, no one complained and it looked better on the board I checked
    it on

That said, I am not sure it needs to be changed. I think it worked as it should have.

What software did you use to post the original message in this echo?

Was it the *same* software you used to post the message in the ADS echo?

Perhaps, but I still would like to know: what software is replacing ESC with ` in ANSI-encoded text, and under what conditions?

If it's your BBS software, what BBS software is that? Is this message area configured somehow differently from the "Ads" message area that would cause it to behave differently?

I would just like to better understand this software phenomena. If you could help me to solve this mystery, I'd appreciate it.

Yes. SLMR posting to a GT Power BBS.

It is configured to 7-bit ASCII, where the ADS echo is configured at 8-bit. When the message was transmitted from that board to a Magicka system, it
did display mostly correct... it was in color and quite legible, but the high-ASCII had been converted. So that there was an issue was not
immediately apparently. On Synchronet and, apparently, Mystic, it
    was not legible at all.

That is weird. The original message came through here with backticks
instead of ESC, why or how magicka would have displayed the colour is
unknown to me. It's been a while since I worked on magicka, but the only conversion was UTF-8 <-> CP437 via iconv.

Was the message to magicka sent on from the 8-bit ADS echo or the 7-bit
FSX_BBS echo? (Sorry, it wasn't clear to me)

The ESC character isn't high ascii, but perhaps GT-POWER does some extra conversion for non-printable characters?

Might be worth downloading GT-POWER and having a play, though i think the website is gone?

    The 7-bit echo, this one.

It would actually be the third-party QWK mail door that converted the
message originally. GT Power did not convert it. The QWK door is
configured to not allow high ASCII in (most) FTN echoes, unless they are
for ANSI BBS ads or art.

    GT itself likes ANSI.

... Goodness! That was close! I almost gave a damn.
