• the nothing to hide argument

I was recently steered to this a YT video (which I haven't
watched yet, 'cuz my mobile data is running low, but I will
    watch at a later time):

    https://youtu.be/KMtrY6lbjcY

..but I did start to read some of the comments about it. In
the collection were some interesting remarks about the "have
    nothing to hide" argument..

When people tell me they have nothing to hide, I tell them to take their clothes off. Suddenly they start to understand the value of privacy.

You got it Peter. You may not have "something to hide" but someone else has "something to prove" and will manipulate your data to show whatever suits their agenda.

The important phrase is "It's not that I have something to hide, it's that someone else most certainly has something to find".

I always like to bring up (I think Snowden said it first) the quote: "Not caring about right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." This matters for EVERYONE.

"Dad, would the government ever implement a program to constantly monitor people in the homes?" "Now Son, where would they get the resources to do that?" My son laughed, I laughed, Alexa laughed.

turns out the dystopian novels were right- what they didn't know is that we would do it willingly.. mostly for fake internet points

I was like this. I thought, the alexa is only listening for key words, it would take too much bandwidth to send everything we are saying in the house. Then Amazon employees stated that they can listen to everything being said inside the house.

It's a sad day when someone feels like they have to convince people they should respect their privacy.

Let's not forget the fact that privacy isn't seen as a given or as a basic right or expectation, it's seen as something trendy and marketable. Remember the Freedom Phone?

@TitanTubs Fully agree. Everyone concerned with privacy and freedoms in this country should obtain a copy of "American Marxim" by Mark Levin. He's probably one of the greatest philosophers and historians alive today.

Coincidentally this is what I'm working on right now for my graduation. I found the way they handle this privacy thing for the citizens in Estonia really interesting. They call it e-estonia - basically, the entire country runs on blockchain. This way everybody is the owner of their own data, protected with a key and they can choose who they give access to their data and for how long etc. This way bureaucratic governmental institutions are mostly obsolete and it's pretty much impossible for your data to leak. I think there must be some way possible to make this happen for social media too. I may be biased but I honestly believe blockchain is the way to go concerning privacy. I hope it works out Destin, I'm rooting for you!

Imagine when we are more integrated with tech and then having access to absolutely everything... Neurolink and other similar technologies will have access to everything internally and externally.... Privacy will be so important ....

@philohan95 The problem isn't how it negatively affects people right now, but how it might affect people. Try this - leave your home unlocked at all the times fora week or month and see what negative consequences does that bring. There will probably be none, will you remove lock from your front door on this basis? Just because it's inconceivable for you to live in a police state doesn't mean it can't happen. Just because you don't have interesting data at the moment, doesn't mean it's wise to strip everyone around from privacy. Many people do have interesting data.

"I have nothing to hide" is just a failure of imagination.

Even if you truly "have nothing to hide" you dont break a single law ever at any time (which is impossible). what happens when that thing you weren't hiding suddenly becomes illegal. It has happened countless times through history and will surely happen again and because you said you had nothing to hide, You let the government create this huge mass surveillance apparatus that will ultimately be your demise.

The laws ought to be written to fit to what people do, not the other way around. If everybody is doing something illegal, then the solution is not to have privacy be our defense against the government, but to change the laws to fit society. You either have nothing to hide, are doing something that ought not be hidden, or are actually commiting a crime. Privacy is not needed. People really do either have nothing to hide, or do.

Example: There are a lot of negotiations going on throughout our life and the success of those are partly dependent on how well you can hide your "thresholds". If a potential employer knows your lowest limit of salary (and/or benefits etc), that is what you end up with. You always have things to hide from others. This is true for almost all kind of relations, even on "private" level, between parents and kids, between the parties in a couple, etc.

And then all the pro-privacy arguments were done on Youtube, owned by one of the most privacy unfriendly corporations on Earth.

It's good to have the discussion about privacy in public. :D
