It's that time of the month, folks! If Comcast or your provider have
instituted data caps, it's time to check your bandwidth usage, and if
you're under the data cap, get STREAMING! See how close you can come
to the limit, without going over.

It's the DATA CAP CHALLENGE, and it's running EVERY MONTH.

I seem to remember hearing Comcast has instituted data caps again. I'm still glad I moved away from Comcast.. And I've been using a fiber internet service for the past 5 years now, and I like the symmetric speeds. Same speed for both upload & download!

I'm glad I ditched Comcast and got fiber internet.
With Cumcast, I had internet and basic cable TV. Their basic cable TV was crap though - They had me using a cable box that outputted a standard-definition square picture. I realized I could get a decent over-the-air signal where I was that provided a better-looking picture, and it was widescreen. I called Comcast to cancel my basic cable TV, but they said my bill would actually increase if I did that. I think bundle pricing is fairly common with other providers though.

I'm currently using Ziply Fiber (formerly Frontier, until Ziply bought them several months ago - and Fronter bought the fiber from Verizon about 10 years ago). I've been fairly happy with it, and I like that I get the same speed for both upload and download.

it depends on where you are at. sometimes they dont have caps or dont pay attention to caps. my friend lives in illinios and has comcast and he has great speeds and loves it. there are no caps.

i'm in a major city and i cant get fiber. it's nuts, i should be able to.
i guess it would take too much work to wire everything up.
when i check the att map for fiber it's very strange. i dont know why these remote areas isolated areas have it. in addition, they are spread far apart by several hundred miles.

If they think they wouldn't get a good enough return from customers signing up, that does seem odd in a major city.

Very small rural towns I've seen typically have to get satellite internet or something - but even in those areas, I could definitely see the benefit of fiber or something, which would be a great upgrade from something like satellite.

My downtown/business area does not (and apparently cannot) have
fibre, but the side-street on the edge of the downtown core that
serves a few homes and the hospital a few hundred meters away has
it. What happened was that the side-street that serves the homes
and hospital was "torn up" along the curb or shoulder one summer and
new cabling was installed. It would seem to be infeasible to tear up
the sidewalks and the downtown core to lay down fibre.

it's not THAT rural. they did most of my state for 'broadband' in the 90s.

these little towns are where they are testing the new stuff. where there's wifi no matter where you go and other things. they said they were turning it into a 'smart city'

I have a cap of 1229 GB/month, with a grace period if I go over one
month. I should make sure and go over soon, I'm sure it'll go away
    eventually.

I go into my office once a week or so to maintain my servers. When I'm
there, I have a fiber and cable circuit, 300/300 each, so I batch up
all of my ISO downloads there.

I'm debating about setting up my local folders to sync to OneDrive, I
might bring my desktop into the office to do the first sync... :)

I just switched to an unlimited plan as I was coming pretty close and
have a bunch I need to download/upload next month. I switched from a
200mb business plan to a 1gb residential plan a couple months ago...
going to unlimited on 1gb is about the same as my business and around
2/5 of what going to 1gb business would have cost, so I'm still pretty
    happy.

Had a similar cap the past couple months... just put together a new NAS
and had a bunch of stuff queued to download that was going to push me
over this month. Just upped to unlimited.

I'm not sure I'd want to use the work connection, bad enough my work
laptop has a hardware VPN connected to it that sends everything through
the work network. With all the active monitoring it's really sluggish.

I'm debating about setting up my local folders to sync to OneDrive, I
might bring my desktop into the office to do the first sync... :)

I have about 3gb that syncs to dropbox, google drive and one drive, registration codes, some zipped projects, docs etc that I don't want to lose... I also have those files on my nas and on an upload drop.

my internet went out for about 8 hrs when it snowed. i have unlimited on my phone so i did a wifi hotspot. i was surprised how well that worked with my desktop computer.

unfortunately i know in the areas that have sat and cell broadband they usually dont have unlimited.

Around the block from me is a company that manufactures trusses for housing
and industrial construction, and I heard from one of their next door neighbors
they had dedicated fiber or at least T1 or T3 service, and were providing internet service via mesh networking. Due to being in the country with less than 10 houses per mile makes it hard to establish the line of sight needed
to make up for any neighbors in between that do not participate in the mesh network.
