Is it just a router? Or is it a modem router?

Well this should be good. A "conversation" between two people who don't know how to quote messages to provide context.

There /are/ tons of BBSes out there
that don't even have a quoting feature,
and somehow people get by just fine :).
The only reason I'm saying this is that
I notice a lot of posts telling people
to quote. Even from users that didn't
have unquoted messages directed at
them.
Big effin' deal, they didn't quote. The
headers do say what message it was a
response to and it's not that hard to
jump back to it yourself. On those
BBSes I mentioned with no quoting
feature, they don't even have that!

it's fairly easy to follow a conversation, or if it's that

One pet pieve I have regarding quoting
is people who insist on quoting an
entire message rather than the relevant
bits. What's your excuse for that? You
know it's easy to select which lines to
quote, right?
It being whatever year it is is
irrelevant. Some of us like to use old
computers. I'm on a C64 right now, in
fact. And ooOoOoOoo look at me quoting
just the relevant bits! So hard.

As far back as I can remember, whether it be BBSing, newsgroups, web forums, etc. Quoting has always been kind of an "etiquette" thing. If you don't choose to, that's fine, but you probably won't get as many responses as you would if you did. :)

Yep... we know about those don't we. This is one reason I built quoting into my ATConnect terminal program for the Atari 8-bit BBSes...

Two messages before the one I'm replying to, was from you to "all". There, it seems as though when you quoted the text it wrapped the ">" characters into the rewrapped quoted text. Here is one of the paragraphs you quoted:
Don't quote that again, as it will mess up even more, but there is definitely something wierd happening somewhere.
Let's figure out what the actual problem is, and get it fixed. Most of us aren't trying to harp on anyone, or put them down. Personally, if something is indeed broken, let's figure it out and get it fixed!

I understand fully what an offline mailreader is.. It's not like
it's rocket science to follow threads in an area that i'm sure
has no more than ten messages at a time.. and as you say with
bbsing being so advanced now, qwk mail can be instantanious, and
theres so many ways to keep up with it.. it really sounds like

i think of it like forming a line at a busy store, or putting a cart back into the corral. it's a pretty low bar to get over, quoting a message.
to borrow a ham radio example: have you ever heard someone calling CQ on a VHF repeater? i have a feeling you know what anyone that responds is going to say to that person. and someone will too, every time.
Dumb and Dumber.
The good news is that both of these dimwits will get tired of "running a BBS" and be gone in a few months.

None of the Atari 8-bit BBSes I ran (beginning in Jan 1984) had quoting. Some of them had to delete their own initialization lines in order to free up enough memory to run and do much of anything... it was what it was back then. But these "40-col toys" were the predecessors to what we are doing now and back then, they were pretty fucking fantastic.
At least you and the other couple of recent resident morons will be gone soon enough, when the "BBS experience" is no longer new and shiny for
you.

He had at least one message in one of the Synchronet support echoes where the whole thing, including his respsone, came out with ">" at the beginning of
each line. I don't know if anyone "complained" but at least one person,
DM, pointed it out to him and mentioned it made it difficult to figure out what text was the poster's and what was quoted.
Sounds like he may have an issue on his end. I also got the impression he is visual impaired which may also make it more difficult to notice (for
him) what is going on when he replies.

maybe he typed it in there by hand because that's what he thought he was supposed to do.
