A lot of people start working when they're in high school (or sometime sooner), before they start college..
I can't imagine college kids not working before they graduate. We had
to push my son to get a job to save some money in the summertime. He
found a clerk position at a local indie grocery store and he had a
great time. He got lucky and had a *great* first boss.
I took a job in the accounting department of the college bookstore and
later worked in the IT department while I worked on a CS degree.
On-campus jobs are a nice intro to the corporate workplace; if I'd gone
straight from classes to my first corporate job it would have been a
hell of a transition.
