i think it's better than it used to be but yeah :) bit weird it's a sort

I'll do the same. That said, Spam Musubi is one of my favorite ways to have it... think large spam sushi for those unfamiliar, usually seared with teriaki sauce.

Spam is just canned pork shoulder, the quality is generally better than most cheap deli meat actually.

Krakus is canned ham, but perhaps higher quality product than SPAM if I consider previous comparison to "mielonka". both exist in plastic wrap and cans.

Yeah, so was I. We ate well sometimes, but certainly not always.

You have to feed sailors well to keep up moral.

That's a small part of it, yes, but not all of what affects moral.
Probably not even the biggest part.

well they don't call it comfort food for nothing. that's one of the few things they can give you in some circumstances. i would say everyone's overall attitude is the major factor of what affects moral. if they show they are

my aunt was a pro chef and she said my uncle ate real well all the time.
that's probably from what he told her.

I've read many times you two argue and I'm sure many times you could feel victimized by your opponent's style.. if that can be called that way.

Still provoking another round, without being invited to fight and playing stupid at the end, makes you an idiot who hasn't yet realized what Stockholm Syndrome is.

That's how I was treating coffee before. I used to say "as long as it works, it can be made from oil" about coffee.

But then at home we purchased some good coffee machine and we started being selective about the beans. Me and my wife have learned how to store it to keep the beans fresh. Roasting is another thing I'd like to learn.

But even if we buy some nice already roasted beans from various vendors and geographic specialties.. coffee actually started tasting well.

I also stopped using sugar in my tea/coffee drinks years ago.
It also helped to sharpen my tongue to start tasting more flavors.

Sugar is such a taste fuzzing thing that was demolishing the whole experience before.

That is correct. I stopped using white/brown sugar about 3 years ago and it took a while to discover my tongue is capable of different tastes.

I also found that with me aging I appreciate more dry/bitter tastes over sweetness.

I could manage it double digit kilos before I turned 40..
now the metabolism is just playing dirty tricks with me..

To loose weight, you need to have a net negative in total
calorie intake in good quality foods (whole foods, no processed
stuff). I used the BMI as a starting point. From that, I
determined the max daily calories to achieve the weight I
wanted to have. For me, it was 1800 cals per day, and that
worked out to about 100 cals per waking hour. With the per hour
insight, I realized that snacking between the 3 traditional
mealtimes was ok as long as I did not exceed the total for the
day. And, by maintaining a steadier cals in shorter hour
intervals, I was less hungry overall.

Another factor in the eating plan was more activity. Most of my
work could be considered sit-down office work (although I
actually stand at my desk and counter) most of the time. But
through the encouragement of a friend, I doubled my average
daily steps and kms from about 1500 steps or 1.6km, to between
2500-4000 steps or almost 3kms. I just started looking for
opportunities to walk more: parking further away from
department store entrances, navigating almost every aisle in
the grocery store even if i don't need anything from that
    aisle, etc.

I see guys about my age who have protruding guts. I was on the
verge of having one myself, but not anymore. I don't have the
definition in abs (have still too much viscercal fat from years
of bad diet) ..but it's look better, gradually.

Krakus is canned ham, but perhaps higher quality product than SPAM if I consider previous comparison to "mielonka". both exist in plastic wrap and cans.

Worth noting that SPAM is relatively high quality compared to most sausages and deli meats. The reputation for being otherwise is pretty undeserved.

SPAM was used by the military in the pacific theater of operations in
WWII since it was easy to keep unrefrigerated. It's still popular in pacific islander cuisine, and Hawaii is the highest consumer of SPAM by state.

"The Food That Built America" had a decent episode regarding the origins of SPAM... it was to preserve pork shoulder in a portable way similar to canned ham, but at a smaller size, so it would be more affordable. It was also spiced and seasoned a bit more heavily to cover the differences in the use of pork shoulder over actual ham.

The reputation for being lower quality is mostly undeserved as it's actually relatively high quality compared to other sausages and deli meats, preserved (canned) or otherwise.

so that must be the ipa gene

This is me. I don't drink beer anymore but boy did I love a super bitter IPA. Same with above. Licorice is terrible, however.

I have about 10 sodas a year on special occasions. One day I thought, this ain't good for me so I just quit. I'm not perfect with health, but that seemed like a fairly easy win. I also quit potato chips which was a harder one because I really liked them, and that I had to do cold turkey. I went to a picnic once and realized I had eaten an entire bag by myself. That was my last potato chip.

Bottom line for me is that non-diet ones that actually contain sugar are probably better/safer for you. If the few extra calories you might get

    significantly bigger problems than that.

yeah, i'm attempting to train myself to think of it like having a beer. you wouldn't have one at work, or a weekday, or whatever. (well, some people might! ha)

it's an addiction like anything. in my case i let it become part of my routine (wake up, get ready, stop at the gas station for the pop, etc). probably best i just replace it with a unsweetened coffee, tea, something to fill that routine.

i quit pop once before via avoiding caffeine. you'd be surprised how much of a flavor/psychological effect/whatever caffeine has. this was back when mountain dew still had a caffeine free option too. they aren't great and it turned my soda-seeking routine into caffeine-free seeking and i just went from there.

i'm working on it again. decided i'm almost 40 and don't wanna add extra potential reasons to keel over early. from family history on average my options are 65 or >80

i lost a lot of weight and size doing low carb. i had a health scare that ended up being stress related. my mom died of covid on her birthday during christmas time and i had to deal with her affairs and her adopted kids, dogs, etc.
I also left my job as an electronics tech and my boss' right hand man.

it was driving my bp through the roof. i was a walking timebomb and i was going to die. so my bp was like 220 over whatever.

anyways, i went on the turkey sandwich diet and i was walking 4-6 miles a day. nothing happened for a long time and then i lost a lot of fat and size.
i still had cheat days but when i had that pizza i put some weight back on.

anyways, i got sick of living that way. i wanted to be happy instead of being fit and attractive. i'm not looking to impress anybody.

so here i am fat again. i'm not busting out , heavy breathing fat either. i can walk 10 miles, easy, i can lift 50lb bags of whatever every day.
right now i want to fit into my old clothes and leather jackets so i think i may be ready to lose weight again.

here's the secret. you have to be ready. if you arent ready, you won't get it done.

Is that the one that's known to cause cancer?

If you consume the equivolent of 80 gallons of soda a day, sure.

Is that something scientifically known, or just something you pulled out of your ....? well, you know.

I'm sure you can provide a reference showing that, right?

Look up the study in question, if you compare the body mass of the mice to humans then calculate the amount they were giving the mice, it's something along the lines of what would take, iirc, 80 gallons of soda per day to intake. Unless you work with the raw ingredient in sufficient quanities and even then would be hard to injest that much. I looked it up and did the math around a decade and a half ago. In any case, it was significantly more than a person is
likely to injest in the form of soda or other liquid beverages.

Also, aspertame and sucralose are more common these days along with a few other artificial sweeteners and sweetness enhancers. The affects of which are somewhat more concerning for some. The Potassium based compound in "Zero" for example. The biggest risks seem to come from hormone responses when consumed outside of meals, the body expects caloric intake when taking in something sweet. This is why I try to keep flavored drinks to just with meals and drink mostly water outside that.

Not all diet sodas are the same. I'd imagine diet sodas with stevia should be better for you, as stevia is a natural plant extract.

Probably, but it hasn't been tested in either case... aspertame in particular is one of the most tested substances other than water on the planet.

That said, stevia soda takes some getting used to, there's a bitter aftertaste on the back of the tongue. If you have a SodaStream, you can use flavored stevia drops with that and it'll save a lot over the canned Zevia and other brands that are pretty pricey.

As an occasional meat product, maybe. But the regular long-term

Bottom line for me is that non-diet ones that actually contain sugar are probably better/safer for you. If the few extra calories you might get from sugar in a soda is a deal-breaker for somebody, they've got significantly bigger problems than that.

Worth noting that a single 12oz can of soda has the recommended limit on daily sugar intake for an adult male. Most people in the US get way behond that.

yeah but sugar soda is empty calories.

Worth noting is that nearly 2/3 of the calories one takes in are purely for energy use. Though excess fructose can be problematic, as only the liver can metabolise it, think all the problems of alcohol without the negative reinforcement of a hangover.

I did low-carb for a while, and lost quite a bit of weight on it. If I were living alone, I'd have stuck with it. I have a vegatarian, a picky eater and a lactose intolerant person in my house I'm cooking for, sticking to a low-carb diet was challenging.

Yeah, it's definitely hard to stick to when you live with people consuming other things, especially if you like those other things. Does the vegetarian in question include eggs or fish? Only ask, as supplements are crucial if not getting at least eggs or fish in the diet (eggs being slightly better for nutrition).

i dont use sugar now and i rarely use salt. frenchfries, taquitos, yes. everything else gets pepper.

The risks of not getting enough salt are FAR greater than too much. The lowest levels of consumption of salt vs the highest only increase BP by about 1-2. Salt to taste. In fact, there have been experiments showing that people often eat to satiety based on salt content, which means if you don't use salt, you're incliuned to simply eat more. Of course, anything prepared for you likely has plenty already. Home cooks often don't use enough though.

Ah.. but from celery it's a accompanied with fiber. Big
difference. And.. natural sources of nitrates are converted to
nitric oxide. According to WebMD, spinach, bok choy, lettuce
and carrots are mentioned as sources of natural nitrates.
Dunno why celery isn't mentioned. But the source of nitrates
in vegetables "are less likely to be harmful (ie to form
nitrosamines). This is because they aren't protein-rich foods
and also contain protective components like vitamin C,
polyphenols and fibre, which have all been shown to reduce
    nitrosamine formation."

This article seems to explain the concerns pretty good:

Yeah, did the same a few years ago when I got it, I'd suggest staying away from the welding co2, it can sometimes be funky, best to get food grade co2 from a brew shop.

Used to be a small brewer in Prescott that would make the max allowed of "real" rootbeer (sasafrass root) once a year, but last run they sold out in a day, and got calls for weeks after so they stopped. I don't think I could go through 5 gallons in any kind of reasonable timeframe. Let alone the sugar content.

    buying bottled/canned water.

on amazon the co2 bottles are 69 bucks for 2 14.5oz100 dollars for 4 60l cylinders

You can exchange them for refills at a few different local stores for a lot less... also, can order directly from soda stream for new canisters. As I said, I bought an adapter and larger bottle(s) that I only have to fill every few months for about $20. This is offset by the more expensive flavored stevia drops I use.

The last time I really used a SodaStream was around 2017 or so, and I don't remember their CO2 bottles being that expensive. Maybe the prices have gone up since then.

Thats for new bottles, you can exchange bottles for a filled one for about $15-17. Although I'm using an adapter with larger co2 bottle that's about $20 to fill, and holds almost 5x what the official ones hold.

I got an adapter hose so I can hook up a regular CO2 tank, I have two
5# tanks they last about 6 months or so, if I used it regularly, would
still last at least a few months.

i have 2 propane tanks, i'll give it a try with that, thanks.

Would definitely not use a propane tank for CO2 for anything you intend to consume.

shut up, don't tell me what to do!

don't think I could go through 5 gallons in any kind of reasonable
timeframe. Let alone the sugar content.

why would people want that? isn't it bad for you?

No worse than caffeine or alcohol. Coca-Cola paid for a bunch of junk studies to get real rootbeer outlawed, when they had to remove cocaine from their recipe.

okay i'm pretty sure it is bad for you. more than caffeine and alcohol.

Yes, and also some manapua (aka char siu bao aka steamed pork buns). The Hawaiian version is the best, imo.
